"I enjoy cooking, dogs, cats, kids, soccer, and living here."

How does this image look different from what we might expect to see in a large city?

What kinds of sounds or smells might you expect to experience in this environment?

Who do you think voiced the caption? Does your perception of this image change based on who said that?

Does this image call to mind any memories from your childhood? Have you ever lived on a cul-de-sac? What was it like?

  1. The pictures of the refrigerator and pantry fascinated me. The spices that I could identify in the pantry are the exact same ones I have.

After looking at the pictures I think I understand why alot of critical minds have viewed suburbia with suspicion. Things just seem too sterile and disconnected, I guess. I know a lot of people that would like something in their life more raw and earthy, but settle with suburbia because of the convenience. Simliar to how I would like to shop at local mom/pop shops, but Walmart is so cheap. :)

    Great exhibit thanks.

  2. I really think what makes this series so good is the use of the captions, and the way they are so perfectly juxtaposed with the images. And all the little details in the photographs are fun to pick out, too. Like the cheesy, fake christmas tree on a lawn with people dressed in short sleeves, and the people with the nice car that insist "we don't really need this to be happy." Priceless!

  3. I am kind of torn when I try to answer the question "Would I want to live in a place like this?" A part of me feels like this would be a nice place to live because is specifically designed for raising a family. Another part of me just feels like it is so fake. I would always feel like I lived in a little bubble or on a movie set. I'm not sure if I would enjoy it or not.

  4. I love how many modern day things there are. I love how they have cars like slug bugs and kids being taught how to ride their bike. This is great!

  5. Upon entering the exhibit, i truthfully thought it was gonna be kinda lame... BUT I was born in 1990, and all these glimpses into the past 20 years before my time is just AMAZING! i too especially love the captions... and the clothes... and the hippie hair... oh this whole exhibit is priceless.

    two thumbs up =)

  6. Honestly, going into this exhibit made me cringe. Not that I didn't appreciate the artist or his views, it's that they were TOO accurate. It is difficult for me to see people who are so satisfied by a life that is not real. I spent my early childhood years in a cul-de-sac like this, and that's what I remember from it, everyone put on a show.

  7. And that's why I chose to live on a ranch in the middle of Nowhere.....for the last 35 years.

  11. Hahaha! When I read the caption "I love cooking, dogs, cats, kids, soccer and living here," I was a little tired and so I missed the comma after "cooking," turning the statement into "I love cooking dogs, cats, kids, etc." XD
This is rather a neat exhibit. I love how it is in black and white, even though color photography was available at the time. It makes the small details easier and more fun to find. ~BYU freshman
