What might this image say about the potential for some buyers to purchase a home beyond their means in order to live in the suburbs?

What is the one "luxury" that this family can't seen to live without? What does that say about their priorities and how they spend their leisure time?

In what ways might Bill Owens be subtly commenting on some of the darker facets of suburban life? Might there be aspects of suburban life that are truly empty?

  2. This was one of my favorite photographs. I think there is a huge difference between what this room looked like then, and what it would look like now. Those people saved up to buy a house, and then had to wait to get furniture and decorations. As a young and poor newlywed, I can honestly say that I don't see much of that today.

It is hard to sacrifice, be frugal, and do without when the people in similar situations as you have beautifully decorated homes. It is hard to live within my means when I see how comfortable and trendy going into debt has made my peers. I think there is something to be learned from good old fashioned doing it the hard way, even if it means starting out with folding chairs.

  3. Growing up I heard stories about how many of the houses in the supposedly rich neighborhood near me were almost devoid of real furniture. I didn't understand it when I was a kid, I figured it was all just show. Looking at it now, maybe its just a different approach to things. Sure, the owners of this room may be obsessed with their image but maybe they just had a life dream of owning a home and if that meant skimping on some other "necessities" then thats okay with them. I can see merit in that.

  4. This picture indicates the residents don't look to be inspired but wait to be entertained. This mindset has entrenched american youth for the past 3 decades.

  6. I believe that this shows the blooming of a physcological need for technology. As long as they had that t.v., that material item, they were ok. T..V. would be able to bring them to any place in the world, allow them to experience adventures they could not afford, and most of..past the time.

  7. This reminds me of our need to connect to the outside world. However, it also shows isolation. I believe it is stating that while we are connecting to more and more of the world, we are losing our connections to others.
